What age can a child start?
We recommend waiting until they are 7 or 8 years old. We will start riders at 6, but for the majority the ability to control a strong 900 to 1500 lb animal is difficult until 7. At that age, they start to think quickly, organize their responses, comprehend instructions well, and respond in a way to help themselves. Our priority is the rider's safety.

What should I wear?
Generally to start with long pants, and a boot with a low heel, or sneakers will work. Please no spaghetti straps, and long hair must be tied back. We provide everything else, including the helmets. Why ride a horse?
Riding is great exercise. It is a healthy life-long activity, fun, builds life-long friendships, and is an opportunity to bond with and understand an animal companion. You will learn patience, responsibility and build confidence. Its a unique chance to compete, grow and learn.
Is riding good for ME?
Its is extremely good for balance, cognitive development, muscle strength and is often used therapeutically. It uses almost all your muscles, including the leg, abdominals, shoulders, neck, back and arms. Did you know the average person can only tighten their stomach muscles for about 10 seconds? A recreational horse rider up to 2 minutes, a competitive and active rider about 6 minutes solid. Try it !!!! Flexibility in the muscles helps with stability and coordination. Riding stimulates the internal organs, helps liver function and digestion, making it great for all, including therapeutic riders. For older riders, and the young too, riding stimulates the brain and keeps it working well.
Is it difficult to ride a horse?
You’re just sitting there, right? Not really. Good riding looks effortless, but it just "looks" that way. There’s a lot going on in the saddle, especially with the muscles, and the point is to make it look easy. When a rider says everything feels effortless that's the moment when hard won skill, meets talent and athleticism. Competing at the higher levels takes more commitment and time. Pleasure riders still burn up to 450 calories every hour. Yes, while having fun!
Is horseback riding a sport?
The definition of a sport is an athletic activity requiring skill, physical prowess, of a competitive nature, and governed by a set of rules or customs. This sport encourages all types of mental exercise that includes things like problem solving, planning and memorization. It also gives an all body workout, increases balance, dexterity, proprioceptive awareness, and strength.
Is there a weight restriction?
Yes. All our horse have weight limits. Our strongest horse can currently only carry 200 lbs. While our horses are regularly worked and trained, they do have a work load, and we restrict weight so they can maintain longer lives.
Can we do shows?
YES! While we do NOT require any rider to show, we love it when they do.
Our shows at our ranch are very successful, easy going learning type shows where we can fully support the riders needs. All our instructors are fully engaged in helping make it a positive experience. Bigger shows are also available for those who are ready! We can advise you to the costs as we progress through lessons. But generally our Schooling shows range from $40 to $120.
Riders generally prep their horses the day before, and arrive at least 1.5 hours before their ride time to help with horses. Advanced riders are expected to help with the shows and the less advanced riders.
